Getsemani, Cartagena.

Getsemani, Cartagena.

  1. The city is a photographers dream 📸 .

Spend hours walking in the old city capturing unique buildings. The old city boasts beautiful historic churches and colonial buildings. Be prepared to take a lot of selfies, but be warned it can get a bit crowded so it maybe hard to get that perfect shot. Just enjoy vibrant city.

2 . The locals are very friendly.

They are always willingly to help and interested to know where are you from. It dies help however, if you learn a few Spanish phrases and questions. I found phrases such as:  How much does this cost? or even how to order food helps. While google translate helps, I did find that Cartagena language had a different dialect. So certain Spanish words meant something different in Cartagena.

3. The seafood is incredible delicious 😋.

Cartagena, is a tropical city near by the sea. This provides access to tropical cuisine, mainly seafood. Most restaurants in Cartagena, have a wide array of fish, lobsters, crabs, shrimp and octopus. One of the most famous restaurant in the city - La Cevicheria, Cartagena has some the best seafood in the city http://lacevicheriacartagena.com/ I tried their ceviche it was the great!

4. It’s a lively and colorful city.

This is one of the busiest city I have ever visited, 24/7 you can see people entertaining non stop; street art can be seen everywhere, with people selling art. Street food is also common in the area, it is relative cheap and good break as “food on the go”.

5. The symbol of Cartagena are the Palenqueras!

These are beautifully dressed women who sell fruits in the streets of Cartagena. Their history comes a long way from 1691, when the first free town of the Americas was formed on outskirts of Cartagena - San Basilio de Palenque. The free women had to earn a living,  would walk miles to come to the city to sell their fruits. The Palenqueras ultimately became the biggest Colombian icons. For a fee you can take a picture with these beautiful women.

6. Cartagena was a “slave port”

The city was once the biggest “slave port” in the Spanish Americas - the Spanish crown transported African slaves to Cartagena. “Buyers” came from all over Americas to purchase slaves to work on their plantations.
